The Orphan’s Song Cover Reveal

The Orphan's Song

I found this story when I was lost. It was the winter of 2015 and I was in Venice promoting another novel. It was the first book tour where I had my two young children with me, and I remember racing home from events to nurse my son, to kiss my daughter before she went to sleep, to relieve my husband of caring for two jetlagged toddlers under three. On this cold night my event ran late, and by the time I left the bookstore, the wind was brutal, the city flooded with aqua alta—high tide. I splashed toward what I hoped was my flat, turning down one narrow alley, then another, everything almost familiar.

At last, I saw three words chiseled on a building’s stone facade—Ospedale degli Incurabili. Hospital of the Incurables. I looked up at this hulking structure, for which the surrounding streets had been named. What was it?  Who were they? I circled the compound and eventually, three more deserted Dorsoduro alleys led me home. But long after my children were tucked into bed, I was still thinking about the Incurables.

Research revealed that the Ospedale degli Incurabili—which now houses a fine arts college—was originally a hospital and orphanage for foundling children, dating back to the fifteenth century. For hundreds of years the Incurables took in orphans and raised them to be musicians. The orphanage attracted the most famous baroque composers as teachers, and many of its musicians became famous, drawing audiences from around the world. The Incurables was the original music conservatory—and each one of its students had been abandoned as a child.

A novel had appeared at my door, begging to be let in.

The Orphan’s Song is set in an era of excess, when Venetians wore masks year-round, when it was uncivilized to be seen with your spouse, when music was the highest art of all. From this world emerged two characters—an orphan boy and girl, a violinist and a soprano—both seeking elusive families and homes. It’s a story of music and mystery, of bonds broken and remade.

To write it, I returned to Venice and spent ten days with Venetian historians, musicians, and caretakers of the former orphanages. I took violin lessons and became a constant patron of the LA Philharmonic. I read Casanova’s memoirs and Vivaldi’s musical theory. I fell more deeply in love with Venice than I imagined possible.

None of my novels has ever found me so already written. Blame it on the Serene Republic and on these characters, still falling in love.

I can’t wait for you to read The Orphan’s Song.

Today

I want to sincerely thank my Pinoy friends (and international friends online) for your love and support this week. You were here for me yesterday, when it was very hard to be far away from home. I deeply wish I were writing a different kind of message today.

Today is the day the Fallen movie comes out in the Philippines, Singapore, and Malaysia. I hope you will enjoy it. I suspect you will.

Today is the day I go home, hold my family, and get to work–like many Americans will and must–protecting what matters to us about our country and the many kinds of different people in it. We have our work cut out for us.

Love trumps hate.

Vows Chords

I’ve gotten many emails from fans of Cam and Lilith’s band Revenge, asking for the chords to “Vows.”  I forward all your messages to Cam, and for months heard nothing back. Then last night, this appeared on the table by my bed:
Vows
C                                    G
I give my arms to you, I give my eyes to you
              Am                      F
I give my scars to you and all my lies to you
         C        G       C
What will you give to me?
                                      G
I give my heat to you, I give the sky to you
                     Am                    F
But if I give my speed to you I cannot fly to you
         C        G       C
What will you give to me?
                                    G
I give a heart to you, I give a soul to you
             Am                        F
I give a start to you–do you know what to do?
         C        G       Am  F
What will you give to me?
         C        G       C
What will you give to me?
He added these notes at the end:
Play it strong, low, and exhausted, near a river or a pond if possible.

A Note about Yesterday’s Fallen Trailer

Incredible Fallenatics,

Thank you for your ecstatic reaction to the trailer that was released online yesterday. You finally got to see glimpses of what makes the Fallen movie so special. Your enthusiasm impressed everyone involved in the movie. (#fallenmovie was the number one worldwide trending topic on Twitter—bravo!)

In the midst of yesterday’s excitement, there was also confusion about whether the trailer was official, how to see the HD version, how to show your support, and when the movie is coming out around the world. We’re sorry about that. The trailer released yesterday was the International Trailer—and it was released earlier than we anticipated or planned. You will be seeing more of that trailer next month around the world. There is also a never-before-seen official US trailer that will be coming your way shortly. This time, we’ll be sure to let you know before it drops. Our release date will also be announced at last.

We are grateful for your ongoing and impressive support.

Passionately yours,

Lauren Kate

Unforgiven

The coolest, strangest thing about writing a series is that dialogue and details, written in a spirit of experimentation, become fixed once a book is printed. Sometimes I have to revisit my books to relearn rules I invented.

Five years ago, three books into the Fallen series, I set a scene on the Jordan River circa 1000 BCE, featuring my favorite character Cam. It was a break-up scene, full of vitriolic heat—a fragment of a romance, a lens through which to see the relationship of Luce and Daniel, whose love so consumed its context it left space for little else.

I didn’t know Lilith then. I didn’t understand why Cam loved her.

I certainly didn’t know that these four pages in Passion—pulled down from my office shelf to answer a reader’s question last summer—would inspire a new Fallen novel.

This is a rock and roll story, a second-chances story, the villain’s side of the story (the villain’s always the hero of another tale)—and above all, a testament to the powerful experiment of love.

Many of you have asked me: What happened to Cam? A part of me must have always known I would return to my most enigmatic character. I think you knew it, too. Unforgiven is available today (in the US/UK/Australia/NZ–and soon around the world). This story is for you.

New music from Cam and Lilith

It was the reddest sunrise I’d ever seen.

I had just typed the last words of Cam and Lilith’s story and was gazing out my window at the sun’s crimson hands pressing through translucent palm leaves. I heard a soft rap on my front door—and then a girl’s mesmerizing voice.

I opened the door. The voice was nearby yet elsewhere, haunted, alone. It held a high note for a few exquisite moments before bending downward in pitch and vanishing.

I stepped outside, searching for the source of the music. On a bench at the edge of my porch lay something small and square: A CD case, tied with a red bow, with one word scrawled across the disc in black.

Revenge.

Headphones on, I slipped the CD into my computer and pressed Play. A girl inhaled sharply, then began singing . . . a song from the book I had just written. A band rose up around her. Immediately, I knew their names and instruments. The disc had only four tracks. You can get them here, exclusively, for one day.  Tomorrow you can find them on itunes and spotify.

I didn’t write these songs. Lilith did. Well, Cam co-wrote one of them. I’ll let you figure out which one. How they came to be recorded and delivered to me, I’ll never know. I learned long ago not to question Fallen‘s magic, but to accept it with a wink and a whispered, “Thank you.”

Original Music from Cam and Lilith

ALBUM-COVER

Do you remember the first time you fell in love with a song?

Three thousand years ago, on the banks of the Jordan River, Cam stumbled upon a girl with long red hair playing a lyre and singing. She called her song “Exile,” though Cam would always think of it as “Lilith’s Song.”

The song—and its singer—changed Cam. They broke his heart. They inspired him to make his own music. They made him the bad boy rocker you fell for at Sword and Cross. Remember when Cam gives Luce the green guitar pick with his room number printed on it? It would never have happened without Lilith. Cam wouldn’t be Cam without Lilith and her song.

Unforgiven is Cam’s side of the story. And his side opens onto Lilith’s story. You’ll discover them both, trapped in the forsaken town Crossroads, when the book comes out. Until then, you can hear their love through their song.

“Exile (Lilith’s Song)” is available today.

On November 10, the 4-song EP by Cam and Lilith’s band–Revenge–becomes available. All 4 songs from the EP appear in the novel Unforgiven. The titles are:

“Exile (Lilith’s Song)”
“Somebody’s Other Blues”
“Famous for a Broken Heart”
“Vows”

Cam Confirmed: It’s happening…

I never stopped thinking about him.

I loved Cameron Briel from the moment Luce discovered him at Sword and Cross. I never doubted that Luce should end up with Daniel—in part because that left Cam for me, and for the many readers who fell for him as well.

Over the past few years, you have asked me: What happened to Cam?

A part of me must have always known I would return to my most enigmatic character. I think you knew it, too. This story is for you.

Unforgiven begins the moment Cam disappears from Rapture. It takes us deep into his heart. It reacquaints him with a love he has long been trying to forget.

Unforgiven is a rock and roll story, a second-chances story, the villain’s side of the story (the villain’s always the hero of another tale)—and above all, a testament to the powerful experiment of love.

I’m nearly finished writing it and can’t wait to share it with you. Stay tuned for details on the cover and release date.

In honor of this exciting announcement, check out this limited time buy-one-get-one steal at my store. And don’t forget to sign up to be a superfan!

Love,

Lauren
