It’s Waterfall Wednesday — 1 week to go

This time next week, I’ll be in Phoenix, Arizona visiting the legendary Changing Hands bookstore for the first time (I can’t wait) and YOU will have Waterfall in your hands (I hope you can’t wait). Below is a little tease from the first scene I knew I had to write into this book. Can you guess what’s happening? Answer in the comments section and repost/retweet for a chance to win a signed book.

A narrow column of swirling air formed over Eureka’s head. It twisted faster, until a few raindrops faded and slowed . . . and turned into snow. The column became thick with bright, feathery flakes that tumbled down and dusted Eureka’s cheeks, her shoulders, her sneakers. Rain thundered against the rocks, splashing into the puddles all around them, but over her head the storm was an elegant blizzard. Eureka shivered, enthralled.

“Stay still,” Ander whispered.

She felt goose bumps as hot tears cooled, then froze against her skin. She reached to touch one, but Ander’s fingers covered hers. For a moment they held hands against her cheek.

He drew a spindle-shaped silver vial from his pocket. It looked like it had been crafted of the same orichalcum as the anchor. Carefully, he pulled the frozen tears from Eureka’s face and dropped them into the vial, one by one.

Waterfall Wednesday

Less than three weeks til I get to share Waterfall with you. Here’s a quote from the book that should get you in the mood.

“What if she could just die kissing him? Then he’d never have to know who she truly was and she would never have to face it.”

Any guesses whom our heroine is referring to here? Respond in the comments section and RT or repost on Facebook for a chance to win your very own signed copy.

International Update

A while back I announced my team of International Ambassadors and since then they have been working very hard to spread the Fallen and Teardrop love around the world. I’m happy to share their amazing efforts with all of you. As always, feel free to show your Fallen spirit and share it with me here.

The first person I heard from was Wan-Yi Chen, who was passing along her passion for my books in Taiwan. She held activities for fans to get together, share books, and talk story. She also shared articles and some of my e-stories online and even had a fan in Hong Kong join her team. It was amazing to learn that she did all this while studying for her college entrance exams!IMG_3650 (511x640)

IMG_3631 (640x480)

Thanks for all your hard work Wan-Yi and congratulations on getting into college!

Next I heard from Anesa Dzafic who was introducing her books to Croatian readers. After she finished dancing for joy in front of what I assume was a very amused mailman, she contacted the library and school she works with in order to share the books and create a new generation of fans in her community.

bild 1

Fun Fact: Anesa is our ambassador not only in Croatia but in Sweden as well.

I also heard from Elke Cremers in the Netherlands. Upon receiving her Fallen copies (and a few newly printed Dutch Teardrops) she passed them out to the other students at her school and is currently writing her own stories, too. We wish her much continued inspiration.

Look for more Ambassador updates in the future and don’t worry I’ll be calling for additional International helpers soon!

A New Heartthrob…

1(51)

My boy Venice was born last month (on his due date, just like his sister was). I’m happy to share this glimpse of the latest edition to our family. As you can see, Milo the dog expanded his role of nanny to two little ones immediately and naturally.

Venice is calm yet determined and his sweetness is astonishing. We’re all doing wonderfully, and feeling very full of love. Thanks to all of you for thinking of and asking about our family.

More from me soon,

xxLauren

I Finally Get to Share…

the title and cover for the sequel to Teardrop. Waterfall comes out (in the US) on October 28, 2014, and I hope you’re going to love it. I’ve already told you a bit about my experience writing this book here. Waterfall is a very important book to me–my darkest, most thrilling, and heart-wrenching yet. With one spectacular cover to match:

WATERFALL_04.28.14

What do you think?

Waterfall is a novel about love, betrayal, and epic consequences. It’s intensely romantic, with strong, sexy main characters caught up in my favorite love triangle. Here’s a bit about the story:

Eureka’s tears have flooded the earth. Now the dark world of Atlantis is rising and Eureka is the only one who can stop it. She travels across the ocean with the gorgeous and mysterious Ander, her best friend Cat, and her family to find Solon, an enigmatic lost Seedbearer who knows how to defeat Atlantis’ rising tyrant, Atlas.

Soon Eureka discovers a dark secret about Ander: Love is his weakness. Any affection he feels toward her causes him to age rapidly, which means she must go forward on her own. Trying to make sense of the flooded world her sorrow has created, Eureka has a soul-crushing revelation upon seeing her reflection in an enchanted pond. If she’s strong enough, she can draw on this knowledge to defeat Atlas—unless her broken heart is just what he needs to fuel his rising kingdom. She has the chance to save the world, but she’ll have to give up everything—even love.

And for anyone who hasn’t read the first book in the series, Teardrop, the dazzling paperback edition also comes out this October:

A year ago today…

…I started writing Teardrop’s sequel. Matilda was eight weeks old. Sleep–for more than a few hours at a time–eluded me. My brain was struggling to form sentences. My heart was struggling to be away from my daughter. There were days during the drafting this book when I would open one of my other books and not recognize the writer who had come up with those sentences. I couldn’t find the rabbit holes I used to love to tumble into with my characters. I feared that I was finished as a writer.

Slowly, over several drafts, it got better. I got some sleep. My brain returned, and with it came my passion for this story. Today, I turned in the final manuscript to my editor. I worked harder on this novel than I have on any of my books. It took three very serious revisions to arrive at the place it wanted to be.

I’m always proudest of my most recent book, but I’m particularly proud of this one. I think it’s my best writing, my best storytelling. I will remember it as the book that taught me I’ll never be “finished” as a writer. Life will continue to complicate itself in beautiful and unexpected ways, but if I listen closely enough to my characters, they will always guide me and my stories where they need to go.

I can’t wait to share this book with you in October. Thank you for joining me on the journey.

International Ambassadors, Round 2!

A few months ago I called for Fallenatics around the world to apply to become International Ambassadors. An incredible number of you emailed me proclaiming your love for Fallen and Teardrop and detailing what you’d do with a big box full of my books. Each applicant’s passionate plans inspired me. From charity auctions to blog giveaways, school library donations to hospital readings, you have wonderful ideas on how to spread the Fallen spirit. After much deliberation, I have finally chosen my International ambassadors for five different languages!

German: Lillie Moss

Italian: Lucia Pannacci

Croatian: Anesa Dzafic

Taiwanese: Wan-Yi Chen

Dutch: Elke Cremers

I hope to keep in touch with these great ambassadors and let everyone know all about their adventures across the globe. I want to give a special thanks to everyone who applied because I know that even those who weren’t chosen this time will still be spreading Fallen love.

Stay tuned for more ambassador calls for other countries soon–including some great Teardrop opportunities!

Lots of love,

Lauren

2013 highlights

What a year 2013 has been! A new baby, a new book, and new friends around the world. It’s been momentous, challenging, and beautiful. Now that the holidays are over, and we’re all embarking on a new year, I wanted to share some of my favorite moments from the one we’ve just wrapped up.

teardrop
I know you’re all asking, “Where can I get that dress? Do they have it on Etsy?”

This fall was all about Teardrop. I’m happy so many of you have been swept away by Eureka’s story, and can’t wait to hear from those of you who are reading it now. I am deep inside the second book, which comes out this fall. I promise it will thrill you.

I had a fantastic tour through Miami, New Orleans, Jackson, Dallas, Chicago, Philadelphia, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Antwerp, London, Devon, Norwich, Dublin, Milan, Bologna, and Rimini! I return from each tour exponentially inspired. Thank you to everyone who reached out to me in person, in a letter, or online to share your experience with the book.

As many of you know, my daughter was born in February. Welcoming Matilda into the world was the best way to begin this year. She is flourishing, becoming a beautiful, intelligent, and very funny girl. Recently she started speaking (ciao ciao! balloon! banana!). I can’t wait for her to tell me more.

bookshelf
10 days old and already a bookworm

2013 was a spectacular year for reading. I know you know what I mean. So many books enchanted me. Here are some of my favorites:

Eleanor and Park

Love in the Time of Global Warming

Where’d You Go, Burnadette

And here are a few of the tunes that I’ve been listening to on repeat:

Royals by Lorde

Young and Beautiful by Lana Del Ray

Broken by Jake Bugg

Sometimes a change of scene and style gives me new perspective on the book I’m writing. Below are links to a few things I’ve written this year that you won’t find between the covers of a Teardrop novel:

My Letters from Lauren newsletter (the place for book and movie news)

Huffington Post (on life-affirming darkness)

Nerdfighters (on being a nerd)

USA Today (on the power of love)

Parade Magazine (on memorable reads)

The Fallen movie is FINALLY happening! This summer I got to introduce you to three of the cast members. This month will bring more big news. I can feel your exhilaration online, and it exhilarates me!

Addison Timlin as Luce

Jeremy Irvine as Daniel

Harrison Gilbertson as Cam

So here we are. 2014. The horizon holds Matilda’s first birthday (I’m already obsessing over the cake I’m going to bake), the next installment of the Teardrop series (the most wrenching tale I’ve ever written), the Fallen filming (in Budapest! this spring!), and other surprises I can’t (and wouldn’t want to) anticipate.

To all of you who have joined me in making 2013 magical, I wish you a new year filled with love.

Teardrop: One Fan’s Interview

TEARDROP DROPS TOMORROW!!!

I can’t believe and can’t wait to finally get to share this book with you. In a way, my stories never feel real until I get to talk about them with my readers. Today I want to share a special reader interview courtesy of my long-time fan, Nollie. I hope you enjoy it and I can’t wait to see many of you on the Teardrop tour!

All my love,

Lauren

Nollie: I want to start with seven questions that allow your reads to get to know you better.

Lauren: Let’s do it.

Nollie: Five adjectives you would use to describe your personality.

Lauren: Stubborn, passionate, intense, dreamy, evolving.

Nollie: Last three songs you listened to.

Lauren: Young and Beautiful, Lana Del Ray; The Wire, Haim; Broken, Jake Bugg

Nollie: Truth or Dare?

Lauren: Dare

Nollie: Least favorite house chore?

Lauren: Dishes. I’ll cook until the cows come home, but I don’t want to clean up after them.

Nollie: Favorite Disney princess/movie.

Lauren:  Ariel. I have a thing for mermaids.

Nollie: First book you remember reading.

Lauren: Matilda!

Nollie: I remember how much of a sweet tooth you have and love ice cream, so what’s your favorite flavor?

Answer: Pistachio

Nollie: Before you start writing, your husband who is a musician makes you a playlist.  Is there ever a time that you can’t find music that fits with your mood and/or with what you were writing about?

Lauren: Music reaches us keenly when we find a song that syncs up with what we’re going through—a heartbreak song in the midst of a heartbreak guts me in just the right way. But I find also music really helpful for accessing a feeling I’m not currently experiencing but that my character needs to feel to get through a scene. When Luce arrived at Sword and Cross for example, and was in a really tough place, I had just gotten engaged and was sorta floating on a pink romantic cloud. But when I turned to some trusted gorgeous melancholy music, I was able to find her voice.

Nollie: There was this scene, at the end of chapter two, between the heroine and her love interest that was really sweet, romantic, and completely organic.  How did this scene come about and how did it help shape the rest of Teardrop?  And knowing the inspiration, how did it feel to see what happened between you and your husband written down on paper?

Lauren: When my husband caught my tear, I knew the moment could be magical transposed onto a page. But I of course already had an intimate relationship with my husband, so I knew his intentions in that moment were to reach me, to console me, to support me, to know me even better than he did. I wondered what the same scene would mean between two virtual strangers, and that’s what led me to writing it into Eureka’s tale.

Nollie: The mythology for Teardrop is very unique and I can’t think of any other novel that has anything similar to what Teardrop has.  With being this distinctive, what types of freedom did you have when writing Teardrop? Any disadvantages?  Also what type of research did you have to do to help develop the Teardrop legends?

Lauren: I was amazed by the breadth of flood narratives I found to plumb from. Every culture has one, and, while there are a lot distinctions from culture to culture, there are also a lot of similarities. I was thinking for a while about how emotions create real worlds—how a person can live in his or her own pain, sorrow, happiness, or surprise—and so I started thinking about writing a character whose emotions literally created a world. That’s where I found Eureka.

Nollie: For a love story, there are a lot of darker undertones that some might not expect.  How do you stay true to the essence of love, while having to tell a story of devastating heartache?  And how might some connect with the emotions that are depicted in the story you are telling?

Lauren: I can’t really account for my books’ darkness, other than I try not to shy away from my characters’ difficulties. In Teardrop, I have another character note that Eureka feels “more powerfully than anyone in the world” but I think this is the way all of us feel actually, when we’re really feeling something.

Nollie: In Fallen, many of your characters were named or had traits after people you knew or liked. For example, Luce after one of your favorite singer Lucinda Williams and Cam was built off your husband.  So for Teardrop, how did you come about naming the characters and learning their traits?  And knowing that Eureka means “I found it” in Greek, does this have any ties to the possibility of finding a lost continent?

Lauren: You’re right about Eureka—and Atlas, who becomes an important oppositional force to Eureka later in the series means (in Greek) “I endure.” Ander is named for Leander, the love interest in the myth (and poem) Hero and Leander, which I find incredibly romantic. And Cat—she’s inspired by a Cat I know and love.

Nollie: Eureka is incredibly imaginative. In chapter one, you write that “her mind fled to wild destinations she didn’t try to avoid.” By being this imaginative, what layer does it add to Eureka’s character and who she is?  And was there at any point that you could relate to what she was visioning or the need to escape reality?

Lauren: Eureka’s depression makes her inaccessible to many of the other characters in her story, but I never wanted her to feel inaccessible to the reader. Developing her imagination allowed me to fully explore her character—and it was nice to feel like I was giving the reader private access to her that most people don’t get. I strongly relate to the experience of feeling like you’re a different person than the rest of the world perceives you to be.

Nollie: In my review for Teardrop, I mentioned that there was something about the South that could be agreed upon that was purely magical.  And I have never know an author to describe a location the way you can.  In Fallen, I felt like I was seeing in a sepia tone filter the world of Sword and Cross.  Whereas in Teardrop, I was seeing Louisiana in Technicolor with dull edges.  In both though, the way you describe the settings, draws in readers into their world, set the mood for the rest of the story and can be perfectly pictured.  What exactly sets Louisiana apart that made it the prime location for what happens in Teardrop?

Lauren: That’s so nice of you to say. Like many authors I admire, I see setting as a character—it needs to have a dynamism in order to earn its place in the book. When I visited Savannah, the place stuck with and to me. I can only say I had a very similar experience when I visited New Iberia, Louisiana. Originally, I thought Eureka was going to be a Southern California girl. I actually wrote a few chapters with her set in LA. She didn’t become herself though until I found her in Louisiana.

Nollie: Unlike Fallen, which some might have suspected would deal with some religious undertones, some might not expect the amount of Catholicism Eureka mentions.  Knowing the region though that Eureka lives in, is this something that she truly believes in, or is it a matter of who, how and/or where she was raised?

Lauren: Faith is an important part of who Eureka is, and her faith is tested in this series, which I relate to and wanted to explore. Yes, part of her faith is decided by who she was born to and where, but the pull to explore that faith is deeply personal for Eureka (and for all of us, I think!)

Nollie: By the time that Teardrop is released, your daughter, little Matilda, for which you dedicate the book too, will be almost nine months old.  Parenthood changes every aspect of how you live, see and feel things.  Exactly how has Matilda changed the way you see, feel and enjoy the world? And how might it spill over into how you write?  And what is the one message or lesson that you hope your daughter will learn from you?

Lauren: Matilda has made me a stronger and a more vulnerable person. Actually, maternal love impacts me in much the same ways that romantic love impacts me. Seeing the world through her eyes is one of the most fascinating experiences of my life—it changes everything and it changes every day. More than anything else, I hope my daughter grows into a passionate (and compassionate) person.

Nollie: For those who might have just picked up Fallen, the book is being made into a movie.  A book and a movie are two different mediums to work with.  Exactly how has the process of turning Fallen into a movie any different, or maybe similar, to when you started working on the book years ago?  Also with all this excitement for the movie from those in the fandom, are there ever any fears that you might disappoint some with what choices have been made?

Lauren: Filming for the movie hasn’t started yet, but so far I can say that the choices made have been really thoughtful and true to the spirit of the books. I’m happy with the script. I adore the director, Scott Hicks, and I’ve loved what I’ve seen so far about the three principal actors. Its impossible to know how the finished product will turn out, but I am optimistic.

Nollie: The amount of support you have received over the years, I’m sure, has been overwhelming.  You have traveled, met and talked to thousands of your fans, and are still making new ones to date.   You have seen hundreds of fan work for Luce and Daniel, heard stories from fans about how they found their own love, and felt the love they have for you.  Is there anything you would like to say to those who have supported you?  And what do you look forward to in the future with fans?

Lauren: I want to say that the way you’ve phrased this question brought tears to my eyes. You described my experience experiencing my readers over the past few years so gorgeously. I feel unendingly grateful for the inspiration I’ve gleaned from my readers. What do I hope for the future? A deepening of my bond with them—and their support in my future writing endeavors.

Today I’m packing for the Teardrop tour! We’ll be on the road for seven weeks and I can’t wait to see your familiar faces and meet new readers along the way. Our first stop is one of my favorite cities–sultry Miami–with a fantastic launch event at the B&N in Pembroke Pines. For anyone who hasn’t seen it, the full tour calendar is also listed below. Please come out and get your Teardrop signed!

International Ambassadors

Do you live in a non-English speaking country? Does your love for the Fallen series cross oceans and languages? Do you want to share the Fallen novels with others and help make sure all your friends are fans in time for the release of the Fallen movie?!

If you answered yes, then you might have what it takes to promote Fallen abroad!

I have a whole stack of foreign language editions that need good homes. So I’m looking for a few dedicated and passionate fans who are either Czech, Croatian, German, Dutch, Italian, Chinese or Taiwanese to take on the challenge of becoming my international ambassador. (If you want to be a Fallen ambassador for a language not listed above, just let me know in the comments section and I’ll keep you in mind for the next ambassador call.)

Show your fallenaticism like these Filipino fans!
Show your fallenaticism like these Filipino fans!

Here’s how it works: email me with “International Ambassador” in the subject line at laurenkatebooks@gmail.com with your name, age, country, occupation or grade/what you want to be when you grow up, and a short explanation of why you’d be great at promoting Fallen. Who would you give the books to? Why? Maybe you have a school library that could use some work, or perhaps your mom works at a children’s hospital where patients need cheering.

Or maybe you just want your family to understand what all the Fallen fuss is about.

Whatever the reason, the fans I choose will be sent a whole bundle of books to distribute as they’ve described, plus one or two goodies of their own. So get excited and start emailing! Submissions close on the last day of this month, September 30th!

xo,

The Winning Soundtrack

Hi Fallenatics,

First I’d like to thank you for the effort you put into creating your soundtracks. Your submissions gave me fresh insight into how you experience Luce and Daniel’s love story. They exposed me to new music I’ve loved listening to–including original songs created by many of you. I got over 300 incredible submissions! It was a blast to read through all of them and very hard to choose just one. I want to give a shout-out to the four runners up: Tai Lynn, Lorraine R., Caitlin Smith, and Haley Marie. Thank you for your inspried ideas and creativity.

….drumroll….

Now, I’d like to announce Anna Griffiths as the winner of the Fallen Soundtrack Contest. I’ve known that Anna was a big Fallen fan since we met in Bath two years ago, and she gave me the most lovingly crafted fan book. What impressed me most about her soundtrack was the way she matched songs to individual scenes and characters based on the moods she felt they evoked. The songs are beautiful and sad and smartly chosen. (And I love that she included a song called Teardrop on her soundtrack. Before you know it, I’ll be asking for your help with songs for the Teardrop soundtrack!)

Thanks to Anna, and thanks to all who submitted. Just a reminder that this is not the ACTUAL Fallen soundtrack, but I promise to share your ideas with the movie folks.

Without further ado, here is Anna’s winning soundtrack:

FALLEN SOUNDTRACK PLAY LIST
GENRES: Alternative/Classical/Modern Classical/Indie Rock/Singer Songwriter/Acoustic/Pop/Folk
SET OF IDEAS #1
~Darker/Somber/Emotional~
Civil Twilight – Quiet In My Town
I have always envisioned the first half of this song to be used in the scene of Lucinda witnessing Penn die in slow motion or when she visits her grave. It’s one of my favourite songs. It truly is beautiful. I also think this would sound good as a song playing whilst the shocked pupils of Sword and Cross look on at the destruction of the battle’s aftermath.
Ludovico Einaudi – Indaco – MAIN THEME
I think the first half of this song is not only pretty, but I think it has a very faint but noticeable gothic under layer to it. I think a song like this SCREAMS the official theme of Luce and Daniel as a whole. I could see this being used very frequently in the movie, and I really do hope you chose this song for the movie! The string sections are truly enchanting.
I also think that this would go well with Luce and Daniel’s first sighting, In the moments before he flips her off. this is now made clear, that this is the main motif for Luce and Daniel. (there is a song lower down the list that I think would go well directly after Daniel flips Luce off.)
This would also go well after their second proper interaction with each other, when Luce goes to research Daniel’s background in the library BEFORE the fire. I can just imagine her flicking through the pages of books, and having soft flashbacks of what she has seen of Daniel so far.
I also think that the song Dietro L’Incanto also by Ludovico Einaudi would be nice song to throw in there somewhere! (if you look past that abrupt intro.) I love that one too, because one of my friends played it to me once before performing it to a large crowd. It was a beautiful moment in my life. (THE JOYS OF BEING A MUSICIAN WITH MUSICIAN FRIENDS! HAHA!)
The Whitlams – No Aphrodisiac
I think this song would go perfectly for the scene where Cam and Luce go into the bar! I always imagined the whole bar scene to be a little sleazy with a jazzy, lazy mood. I think the song would be best fitted if it were on a radio playing in the background faintly in the bar.
Massive Attack – Teardrop
This is one of my all-time favourite songs by one of my all-time favourite bands. The vocals are by Scottish vocalist Elizabeth Frazer from the cocteau twins. The song is both creepy and almost trance-like. I love the dark beauty to it. I’m not sure what specific scene this song could fit into, but I feel as if it could be a worthy contender for a spot in the play list!
Oh Land – Lean
I think this song could be a good song to play whilst Luce is alone in her new room at Sword and Cross, unpacking her things, and having small flashbacks of her sentence, and Trevor’s death. (Trevor’s death being hazy visions and images.)
James Newton Howard – The bad colour (MUSIC TAKEN FROM ‘THE VILLAGE’)
I think up until 0.36, this would go great in the scene when Luce overhears Gabbe and Daniel talking during the party outside.
SET OF IDEAS #2
~ Rocky/Exciting/’Badass’/Energetic ~
Mikky Ekko – Who Are You, Really?
You may have heard of Mikky Ekko from the hit single with Rihanna, ‘Stay’. Mikky Ekko makes very exciting music in general, and this song is great! I think this could be used in the scene of some sort of preparation for the battle at sword and cross. I can just imagine people painting tribal marks on their faces when I listen to this song! It’s truly great, and exciting!
Lana Del Rey – Lolita
Okay, so Lana Del Rey is one of those artists that either you love insanely, or you hate with a passion, and me? I love her insanely for reasons that would take me hours to explain. This song, Lolita, I can just imagine in some sort of party scene. It’s full of ‘black-lace’, and it’s got a ‘ghetto’ feel to it, which some characters represent to me, such as Molly and Arriane. (Please do not let this song put you off the entire play list if you dislike it!)
Skinny – Failure
This song has such a vibey groove to it! I can almost image this song becoming Roland’s theme!
Hard-Fi – Living For The Weekend
Again, I could see this song being featured in some sort of battle or battle preparation scene. Or maybe, even, the section of ending credits where visuals are shown crediting the main actors and production team before rolling all the cast and crew credits.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra – Swim And Sleep
If there were to be a scene in the movie showing pre-Sword and Cross Luce having fun at a summer camp BBQ with Trevor and her friends, I think this song would be a great song to have in the background on some form of radio or something. It’s reasonably retro, but has a funky theme to it.
Sweet Baboo – Lets Go swimming wild.
Like ‘no aphrodisiac’, I think this song could go very well in the background of the scene where Luce and Cam go to the bar.
The Dead Weather – I can’t Hear You
I think this song would be perfect for the moment when Luce looks away from Daniel, embarrassed by his rude hand gesture to her. I can imagine this playing when Luce walks into her first class (just after her first interaction with Daniel), and the students are all plotting things, and messing around with each other whilst trying to dodge their teacher. It’s got a sexy, dangerous feel to it.
Massive Attack – Risingson
I think this song could go well for when the fire breaks out in the library. With bells ringing, and people screaming, and alarms blaring, I think it could be one of the darkest moments in the movie.
SET OF IDEAS #3
~ Happy/Triumphant/Gleeful/Victory ~
Edward Sharpe And The magnetic zeros – All Wash Out
I think that this beautiful song could go with two scenes.
1. When Luce and Daniel swim out to the rock together.
2. When Daniel tells Luce that he shall be with her soon on the island that she is taken to, and kisses her and as the plane goes into the distance.
(There’s a climactic section of this song near to the middle which could be the part where Luce is siting in the plane recollecting her and Daniel’s moments together so far, and her mentally preparing herself for their future.)
This song is gorgeous, and I think it would be really REALLY fantastic song to end the movie before the credits.
Matt Corby – Lighthome
This song always makes me feel emotional, in a good way. I think it would also be a very good song to play when Luce and Daniel first kiss on the beach. I think with the dim glow of the sunset in the background, and Luce’s hair waving in the wind whilst Daniel passionately kisses her for the first time in this life, would be a really beautiful touch. At roughly 2:11, after the song’s climax, it would be really perfect to play the ending when Luce and Daniel are shown driving back to Sword and Cross, with them exchanging sweet glances now and again.
Angus And Julia Stone – You’re The One That I Want
I think this song would go well in depicting a potentially ‘steamy’, passionate moment between Luce and Daniel kissing, where Daniel has to refrain from hurting her, and then afterwards, they just hold each other, embracing a beautiful moment together. This song is unique, because it’s a sultry cover of ‘you’re the one that I want’ from grease. It’s beautiful in the sense that it is NOTHING like the original version.
Vampire Weekend – Hannah Hunt
SONG ONLY RECENTLY RELEASED IN THE USA ON MAY 14TH-NO VIDEO
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SONG, AND THIS BAND!!! I really do believe that this song would go very well in the end credits of the movie! I want this song in the end credits more than anything else! The band, Vampire Weekend, are my all-time favourite band, and this song, ‘hannah hunt’ is off of their newly released third album, ‘modern vampires of the city’. Its a beautiful ballad with really really subtle elements of elements of country music and electronica. There’s a beautiful climax section to this song, which really will go well playing off into the very last names of the credits. I cannot stress how much I think that this song will embody the sheer beauty of the love story of Luce and Daniel. It’s also eerie, which makes it even more unique. The lyrics are also very beautiful, which will fit with the theme of the tale; time, and love. PLEASE INCLUDE THIS SONG AS THE END CREDITS PIECE! (I am also seeing them LIVE next month!)
IDEAS LIST #4
CHARACTER THEMES/MOTIFS
LUCINDA PRICE – Ludovico Einaudi – Passagio OR Eisley – Marvelous Things
Passagio – this song has a playful theme to it, which symbolises youth, to me, which Luce has plenty of. It’s simply stunning, too.
Marvelous Things – again, this song has, at first, a serious, dark theme to it, but then breaks out into a beautiful chorus full of youth and hope.
DANIEL GRIGORI – Bridezilla – Mister Young
This song has a dark, powerful flow to it, which just screams something important and crucial to Daniel’s character. It’s full of excitement, but tells me that it could be worried, or tired.
 NO VIDEO
CAMERON BRIEL – Mellowdrone – Orange Marmalade
It’s a sleazy one. This song reminds of Cam, and how he can be a bit of a naughty boy with his attitude and image.
ARRIANE ALTER – Princess Chelsea – The Cigarette Duet
This song is just as quirky as Arriane is!
PENYWEATHER VAN SYCKLE-LOCKWOOD – Pinback – Seville
Penn was a hard choice, and I like this choice. It reminds me of her character, which is friendly, caring, somewhat positive, but still damaged at the same time.
GABRIELLE GIVENS – Primal Scream – Rocks
I can just imagine Gabbe jumping up down to this song! She’s not a girly-girl, but she still has that sassy personality and look. This song is so bad ass, and I can just imagine her walking down the corridor, curls flowing, white pearly teeth gleaming with a massive smile, with everyone looking at her!
ROLAND SPARKS – Electric Guest – Awake OR Skinny – Failure
Awake – I always imagined Roland to have this cool, Californian vibe, what with his attitude and the dreads he has. This song has a funky feel to it that I love! It also sounds almost mischievous, which Roland is, by sneaking things in  to Sword and Cross. (I have also seen this band, Electric Guest twice LIVE. Both times have allowed me to meet the lead singer, Asa Tacconne!)
Failure – Again, a groovey vibe!
MARY MARGARET ‘MOLLY’ ZANE – The Kills – DNA
The song is just as gut wrenching as Molly is herself!!

Winning Dream Cast

Hey Fallenatics! Thanks to everyone who entered the Fallen Dream Cast contest. You shared so many terrific ideas that it was tough to choose a winner. (Just a reminder: THIS IS NOT THE OFFICIAL FALLEN CAST. This is one fan’s brilliant vision!)

And now, a super congratulations to our winner… Valentina Paz Gajardo Rivera! Her witty descriptions charmed me, and I love the YouTube videos she chose. Her passion for Fallen is clear, and her casting decisions are inspired. Take a look at these clips to fully enjoy Valentina’s dream cast.

Do you think any of these actors will make it into the Fallen film? I hope to share the *real* cast with you very soon!

xx

Lauren

1.   Kaya Scodelario as Lucinda ‘Luce’ Price.

tumblr_ltt3fg7t8k1qekjlxo1_500-300x250

I think Kaya would make an amazing Luce. Ever since I saw her on “Skins” as ‘Effy’ I’ve thought she was a very good actress. I think Kaya can angst and act wild and crazy quite well. Those emotions are what I expect Luce to show, because Luce seems to always be about to lose her mind due to all the hard things that have happened to her during “Fallen”, and after we see her pretty rebel and tough in “Torment”, only to discover her true inner strength. Though I know Kaya has blue eyes, I think she could still fit how Luce would look physically: dark and wavy hair, pale skin and her complexion.

2.   Tim Pocock as Daniel Grigori.

images1

I’ve struggled with Daniel’s look since I started reading the books. I just can’t seem to picture him blonde (Thanks to my boyfriend who has brown hair and I often project him while I read). So I’ve never really imagined how he would or could look. That was until I saw a promo for “Dance Academy” recently. Tim Pocock is quite handsome but not in what I’d describe as in a “regular” way. He has amazing bone structure that I envision Daniel having. Being an angel, I picture him as very masculine and I’ve always considered a strong jaw to be a very manly thing. Not to mention he also has that to-die-for sculpted body and nice eyes.

3.   Adam Gregory as Cameron ‘Cam’ Briel.

adam-gregory-02-225x300

I’ve been in love with Cam since the very beginning, and it’s not that I’m team Cam for Luce, because I truly believe she belongs with Daniel. It’s just that he’s the bad boy who’s been hurt and who struggles during the whole saga. That said, I still think he was kind of a jerk during “Fallen” and “Torment”. The moment I saw someone else’s dream cast and saw Adam Gregory on it, I was sold. Adam played ‘Ty’ on 90210 and he played the ultimate rich cocky boy that happens to want the new and innocent girl, only to break her heart, along with a couple more. But he still showed some true feelings and it just spelled out Cam for me… well,
that and his amazing physique.

4.   Emma Watson as Arriane Alter.

Unknown

Arriane is also a character I’ve kind of struggled to picture, but I think Emma Watson could be a good choice to play Arriane. She has been stuck as ‘Hermione Granger’ for too long and she’s been trying to let go of that role by appearing on “The Perks of Being a Wall Flower” and now “The Bling Ring”, portraying two very different roles – from Hermione and from each other. She really surprised me when I saw “Perks”. ‘Hermione’ was always a very strong character and a brainiac, but Emma played Sam, who’s so vulnerable and outgoing, incredibly well. I think Emma is a fantastic actress and I would love to see her as someone who’s at the same time fun and crazy but still very friendly and strong. Emma has showed that she can both rock out short hair and
that she’s a very talented actress.

5.   Dianna Agron as Gabrielle ‘Gabbe’ Givens.

images

The same thing that happened to me with Adam Gregory happened with Dianna Agron. Someone cast her as their dream Gabbe and I realized that person was totally right. I searched for Dianna Agron images on Google and I thought she was the true definition of a southern beauty with her long and beautiful blonde hair and those big blue eyes. I immediately cast her as my
Gabbe too. I’ve seen Dianna play some cute characters, but none like Gabbe and that makes it very interesting for me. Gabbe is not just a pretty face, she’s also a big hearted person and tough as nails, so it would be quite interesting to see Dianna in a stronger and nobler character.

6.   Cara Delevingne as Mary Margaret ‘Molly’ Zane.

cara-delevigne

I had another actress in my head as I was reading the books for Molly, but recently I went to the movies and saw “Anna Karenina”
and there I got to see Cara Delevingne. The movie presented her as a fantastic mean girl. Cara has a very rocker chic sense of style in her everyday life and she kind of has the face of someone you don’t want to mess with, because she isn’t just pretty, she’s very intense looking too. So once I thought of it, she made the perfect Molly for me, someone mean yet beautiful and rebelious.

7.   Samuel Larsen as Roland Sparks.

Unknown-1

I never really had in mind how Roland would look like until I saw Samuel Larsen on “Glee”. He just has the Roland style all over him! He’s new in tv and I think portraying Roland could be an amazing challenge for someone like him, specially because he could grow as an actor and embrace the character. In “Glee” he plays a very quiet and religious character, so it would be fun to see him as someone with a sad past, yet still a party boy. Dreadlocks included.

8.   Ellen Page as Pennyweather ‘Penn’ Van Syckle-Wood.

images-11

Penn is described as a very lonely and awkward girl and I think Ellen Page’s ‘Juno’ was all Penn: she’s weird, kind of a loner yet a good person. She’s also kind of what I picture when I think of a nerdy actor: she looks very smart and she has played very intelligent and emotional characters, so for me she has everything needed to play Penn.

9.   Gary Oldman as Mr. Cole.

Unknown-2

Mr. Cole was that character that I always pictured as very strict, yet at the same time someone with a sort of parental role as he takes care of and helps Luce and Daniel. I love Gary Oldman’s ‘Sirius Black’ in the Harry Potter saga. He was very good at channeling his parental side toward Harry. He was so believable and memorable and it’s one of my personal favorite
characters because he plays a tremendously important role in Harry’s life. Also, I really liked his role in Batman as ‘Commissioner Gordon’; again he played a loving parent and a very loyal character. Those are the kind of feelings I get when I picture Mr. Cole in my head so I think he could be amazing in this role.

10. Anna Paquin as Sophia Bliss.

Unknown-3

Miss Sophia is just the character we all love to hate and to make that even more obvious I always thought she would have to look flawless, amazingly beautiful, and young. Anna Paquin plays goodie-two-shoes ‘Sookie Stackhouse’ in “True Blood” and I think she is a surprising actress. She portrays a very naive character who everyone seems to want to help and take care of, while still being disliked by some other characters. I think that quality is very Sophia-like: she projects herself as someone very relatable that you can trust and then BAM! she stabs a knife in your back. So I would really like to see Anna showing a more feisty and fierce side standing in Miss Sophia’s shoes.

11. Lisa Edelstein as Doreen Price.

images-1

Well, during “Fallen” we don’t really learn a lot about Luce’s parents, at least until the last part of “Torment”. But somehow I always managed to get an idea of Luce’s mom in my head, which is kind of stereotypical. I picture her as very neurotic and a control freak who kind of loses it after what happens to Luce in the fire and after her troubled childhood,
becoming really pushy as a way to protect Luce. Lisa Edelstein plays a very busy and neurotic woman in “House” and when I thought about Luce’s mom she came to mind as a very good choice.

12. Christopher Meloni as Harry Price.

Unknown-4

On the other hand, I have always thought of Luce’s dad to be a much more reachable character, who tries to make things easier on his daughter. I’ve loved Christopher Meloni ever since I started watching “Law & Order SVU”. He plays a tough guy, who struggles a lot with family issues, but you can see he really tries to be a good father and cares about his family. That’s why I would like to see him finally in a more closely paternal role.

13. Dot Jones as Randy.

DownloadedFile

I absolutely adore the character Dot Jones plays on “Glee”! She’s just super! Such a tender, vulnerable, and fun character and she completely nails it! She’s an amazing comedic actress and that’s exactly why I would really like to see her as a tougher and less “adorable” character like Randy.

14. Callan McAuliffe as Todd Hammond.

DownloadedFile-1

I love how Callan McAuliffe always seems to be serious, with his tiny eyes and confident look. Still he was a complete sweetheart as ‘Sam’ in “I am number four” when he played the good guy. Todd is a character, though we don’t really know much about him, shows amazing strength by helping Luce out from the fire in the library. That’s why I pick him for Todd, he kind of has the bad boy look but he’s also very charming.

15. Emma Roberts as Shelby.

DownloadedFile-2

I think Shelby’s a really cool character. She’s a total badass and she’s all cocky and sarcastic, but deep down she’s still a very emotional person and a loyal friend and it’s nice to figure her out as the book goes on. Emma Roberts is someone who I believe could absolutely portray that kind of girl. She has done a lot of shoots for Tyler Shields in which she looks completely different from the good girl role I was used to seeing her in, so I thought it be nice to see her cast as Shelby who’s so determined and fun. Plus, I think she totally has the Shelby look.

16. Thomas Mann as Miles Fisher.

DownloadedFile-3

Miles is the sweet guy who’s always in the friend zone waiting and waiting for the girl he loves to finally notice him, suffering silently and always being there for her… and then, suddenly he notices a girl that does like him back and both fall in love. That’s the cutest of the cutest. Recently I saw Thomas Mann in two movies: “Hansel & Gretel: Witch hunters.” and “Beautiful Creatures”, and in both movies he landed secondary roles. He seems so naïve and willing to help in “Hansel & Gretel” that I couldn’t keep from
thinking he’d make a stunning and adorable Miles.

17. January Jones as Francesca.

images-3

When I think of Francesca I picture a very accessible, caring person who at the same time is very smart and suspicious. Therefore, I’ve always pictured her in my mind as someone very beautiful but with a sort of stiff look, and that’s where January Jones came up to me. She has a very cold and intense look and she’s a very beautiful actress that happens to have a great smile. She just speaks ‘Francesca’ to me.

18. Matt Bomer as Steven.

I am crazy in love with Matt Bomer: he’s so handsome and has the most stunning physique, and I absolutely love his eyes. Steven seems so mysterious and sexy, that it just makes perfect sense for me to choose Matt Bomer, because I would love to see him portraying a more serious character.

19. Zoey Deutch as Callie.

images-4

Callie is Luce’s best friend from Dover and she’s always sounded like the very bubbly, cute girl who’s very attractive and it’s into boys and partying. I’ve pictured her as a very pretty and fresh looking girl. When I saw Zoey Deutch in “Beautiful Creatures” I thought she embodied that southern beauty and kind of sassy attitude, while still being very refreshing. So, for me she would be an amazing choice for Callie, where she would have the chance to play a little bit more of a good and soft character.

20. Alex Pettyfer as Trevor Beckman.

images-21-1

Trevor seems to me a very stereotypical character: the football player with everything he could ask for, including a hot girlfriend, but who somehow realizes he might want different things than what others want. Unfortunately, he dies kissing Luce. So what a better way to suffer along with Luce than by killing a really hot guy? Alex Pettyfer is very handsome and I’d like to see him even if it is for two minutes at the beginning, because I think he portrays the handsome jerk pretty well, like his role as ‘Kyle’ in “Beastly”.

Matilda

Our daughter Matilda was born in early February. The past couple of months have been gorgeous, overwhelming, and unforgettable. I knew I was going to love her, but I was unprepared for how powerfully that love would take hold of me. It gets stronger every day.

Matilda is healthy and strong. She enjoys sunrise, her dog, long drives on windy roads, and moments of quiet contemplation. This week she started smiling—and now that’s all I can do, too.

If you’re wondering how Milo is adjusting to the new baby….

Thank you all for your kind words and warm support for our family. If I get to meet you on my next book tour somewhere around the world—chances are you’ll get to meet Matilda, too!

Casting Contest

Yes, in case you didn’t know the good news, Fallen is being made into a movie. The rights were purchased by Mayhem Productions and the wonderful Scott Hicks has been chosen to direct. I am an executive producer for the film and I promise to let everyone know the moment any open casting calls are announced. Lately, I’ve been receiving lots of wonderful casting suggestions from readers. What better way to thank your for your interest in the series than with a casting contest? So here’s the deal: Send in your dream cast and explain why you chose each actor for each character’s role by March 25th to my email Laurenkatebooks at gmail.com. I’ll pick one of your submissions and post it here on the site (and keep it in mind for the real casting, which will be happening soon!).

And if you missed my recent blog post on USA Today, here is my time-bending fantasy cast, if I could have my pick of any actors from any era:

Luce: Olivia Hussey from Zefferelli’s Romeo and Juliet makes the intense vulnerability of true love look magnificent. She’s innocent, hopeful, and willing to give all of herself to Romeo, just as Luce gives herself to Daniel.

olivia-hussey-from-romeo-and-juliet-300x224

Daniel: Steve McQueen from the Getaway is tough and independent. He can be diffident, but is unabashed when it comes to love. And he’s undeniably sexy.

steve-mcqueen-the-getaway-300x200

Cam: Sean Penn in Bad Boys would be perfect for the villain we love to love. The rougher and tougher he is, the more we fall for him.

sean_penn_in_bad_boys-205x300

Arriane: Stockard Channing in Grease is sassy, sexy, and surprising enough to make a superb Arriane. We yearn to trust her even as she keeps us guessing what’s behind that knowing ever-present smile.

Stockard-Channing_in_Grease-300x141

Roland: Harold Perrineau from another version of Romeo and Juliet (Baz Luhrmann’s) is mysterious and unique. He manages to be loyal without ever seeming too “moral” and his imagination is a wonder to behold.

Harold_Perrineau_in-Romeo-and-Juliet-300x169

Gabbe: Alicia Silverstone from Clueless plays the role of the quintessential buttoned-up beauty who still knows how to throw down. She’s intimidating from a distance but happy to befriend the new girl and show her the lay of the land.

alicia-silverstone-clueless-287x300

Penn: Diane Keaton from Annie Hall is just as charmingly neurotic as Luce’s best pal at Sword and Cross. She’s the kind of girl you can be completely yourself with and never feel self-conscious.

diane-keaton-in-annie-hall-300x198

Miles: John Cusack in the Sure Thing is just shy of being too sweet for his own good. Like Miles, he falls in love easily and is irresistible to everyone–except the girl he wants.

I look forward to reading your suggestions!

The Teardrop Cover

It almost brings tears of joy to my eyes to be able to share the astonishing Teardrop cover with you. Thanks to all who helped with this sneak peek by liking the Fallen Facebook page.

Here’s a short description of the book, which will be available in the US on October 22nd, and around the world shortly thereafter:

Never, ever cry. . . . Eureka Boudreaux’s mother drilled that rule into her daughter years ago. But now her mother is gone, and everywhere Eureka goes he is there: Ander, the tall, pale blond boy who seems to know things he shouldn’t, who tells Eureka she is in grave danger, who comes closer to making her cry than anyone has before.

But Ander doesn’t know Eureka’s darkest secret: ever since her mother drowned in a freak accident, Eureka wishes she were dead, too. She has little left that she cares about, just her oldest friend, Brooks, and a strange inheritance—a locket, a letter, a mysterious stone, and an ancient book no one understands. The book contains a haunting tale about a girl who got her heart broken and cried an entire continent into the sea. Eureka is about to discover that the ancient tale is more than a story, that Ander might be telling the truth . . . and that her life has far darker undercurrents than she ever imagined. From Lauren Kate comes an epic saga of heart-stopping romance, devastating secrets, and dark magic . . . a world where everything you love can be washed away.

Reading like a Writer

Happy New Year! In case you missed my writers in residence series on Totally Random, here are my tips for reading like a writer.
First, get a library like this. Just kidding.
First, get a library like this. Just kidding.
Read as much as you can, as widely as you can: First, seek out other novels that orbit the same world you’re interested in writing about. Learn the hallmarks of your genre. (And by “genre” I simply mean “category.” All writing falls into a genre—from science fiction, to contemporary realism, to academic journals. Genre never is and never should be a pejorative term). Learn the rules and how to break them. Figure out what you think is most exciting about your genre and what you think are the biggest pitfalls. And then—pick up a book that is as far outside the world in which you’re writing as possible. Pick up a non-fiction book about popular science or a thick old Russian classic. Trust that you can learn something that will expand your mind and your capacity as a writer in every book you enjoy. But don’t waste your time. Obviously, not all books are for all readers. That is okay! I give most books fifty pages; if I’m not hooked as a reader after that, I move on to something else. Read several novels at once! When I started writing YA novels, I began alternating between one contemporary YA novel, one non-fiction book, and one classic novel—sometimes all in the same day. Right now, for example, I’m reading a non-fiction book about the history of tears called Crying, as well as Moby Dick and Margot Lanagan’s spectacular The Brides of Rollrock Island. I enjoy the way the texts interact with each other. It’s almost like all the books I’m reading at the same time are in the same room, bumping into one another, sometimes having to apologize for stepping on the other stories’ toes.
Don’t be afraid of being influenced: I often hear about writers shying away from reading a worthwhile book because they’re worried it’s too close to what they want to write about. This is a fear that I strongly believe must be overcome. Writers must write and read throughout their lives, and if they take time off from reading every time they’re writing…they’re going to have a lot of catching up to do. All great writers have their influences. In fact, naming your influences is a question interviewers love to ask writers and readers often love to know about their favorite writers. No writer should feel ashamed to have found inspiration in someone else’s story. We should only feel emboldened. Embrace your influences fearlessly. Borrow from the greats and don’t look back. Readers who look closely might see William Faulkner, Charles Dickens, Virginia Woolf, Vladimir Nabokov, Ernest Hemingway, William Shakespeare, Philip Pullman, Roald Dahl, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez all being paid homage to in my books. I’m honored to have loved their stories and enjoy being able to show my appreciation with small tributes in my own books. Of course, being influenced is not the same thing as being a plagiarist. It should go without saying that we still need to do the work to make the things we borrow our own. Roland Barthes famously said that “the text is a tissue of quotationsdrawn from the innumerable centers of culture.” As long as we remain curious and open to drawing inspiration from everything around us, our tissues of quotations will be rich and varied and uniquely our own.
Take notes: A devoted reader’s tendency with a truly remarkable book is to escape completely into the text, to forget his or her surroundings and enter the world of the story. I know this is a delicious activity, and occasionally, I allow myself the indulgence. But most of the time, I fight to keep my mind slightly above the surface of a great book so that I can ask myself the questions that will make reading it not just enjoyable for me as a reader but also productive for me as a writer. When a book makes me laugh, cry, or shout out “Wow!” I stop. I take a minute and ask myself how the writer pulled off this miraculous feat. I trace back the steps that led to my emotional response. How did the writer handle the pacing leading up to that critical moment? Did things slow down or speed greatly up? When did the character go from being a separate entity to the suit I put on, zipped up, and became? How and where were the seeds planted throughout the book to make this particular moment so effective? Do I have a sense that the author knew all along that this moment would be revelatory, or does it feel like one of those magical curveballs the brain sometimes throws at a writer in the heat of typing? All of these questions will produce highly subjective responses. If I were to answer them, to ask another reader to answer them, and to ask the writer to answer them, we would have three completely different sets of answers—that doesn’t matter. What matters is what lessons you, the affected reader, want to take away from your experience. What matters even more is how you can learn to apply these lessons to your own writing in the future.
Join a discussion group. Maybe some of the things I’ve been suggesting sound like good advice…but you don’t know where to start. Maybe to you, books have always been a private getaway, a chance to let your mind go, a place you want to experience but not have to scrutinize. Maybe thinking critically about your favorite novels feels like something best left inside a dreary literature class. Maybe you simply don’t know how joyous book discussions can be! I grew up with a mother who loves to read, who was always suggesting books to me, and who enjoyed talking about the things she read, so chatting about plots and settings and point of view, gossiping about characters as if they are real people is very natural to me. If you haven’t had that experience and you are interested in writing, I suggest seeking out some kind of community to discuss the books you love (and love to hate). Book clubs can be marvelous. Online forums are a great way to connect with people with similar reading aesthetics you might otherwise never have found. Stop into your library or local bookstore; they often host discussions of books, sometimes even when the author is present. I should add that the best book club discussions I’ve had often occur over a book that inspires varying opinions. It’s fun to bond with a group of people who wholeheartedly love the same book you love and have no questions or complaints about it…but it might help you more as a writer to get into the nitty gritty of a book that compelled you but also made you think: Why did the author make that choice? Why didn’t the author explain xyz? How does my worldview impact the way in which I read this book? Why did the ending bother me so much?
Cheers to fresh starts, new ideas, and endless inspiration!

Happy reading and writing,

Lauren

And the winner is…

Thanks to all who participated in my Thanksgiving Contest. You sent in wonderful, thoughtful responses. I loved reading your praise of fiction.

Congrats to Savannah W. on her winning entry (keep an eye out for your Fallen box-set in the mail!) And a special shout-out to  runners up: Adriana, Cara W., Carmen B., and Arrielle.

In Savannah’s own words: “Fiction makes me thankful because even in the most fantastical, most unrealistic stories, there is something very real about the characters that we grow to love. Characters in fiction books can show us the best and worst in humanity and help us to see those traits in ourselves. A great fiction book can give us a best friend when we feel we have none, find us love in an unloving world, and break our hearts as though it were happening to us. I am thankful for fiction for the days when it gives me hope for a better future, and the days of comfort when hope is nowhere to be found. I am thankful for fiction for keeping me up at night reading and for keeping me impatient as I wait for the next installment of a best-loved series. I am thankful to fiction for the days when I finish a book and simply cannot move from the spot where the story left me, because I am still too invested in this world that I love. I am thankful to fiction for the tears, the talks, the laughter, the smiles, and the fury. But most of all, I am thankful to fiction for taking me to a place outside of myself, but a place that is wholly within myself.”

Thanks again!

This Year’s Falloween Costume Winner…

A salute to my top pick for this year’s Fallen-inspired costume. I love the way Fallen fan Rhullian Gloom gave the Angel look a dark twist with the black wings, dark clothing, and combat boots. Just like the book covers, this image evokes a great mystery that leaves us wanting more. Thanks for sharing Rhullian.

Fallen Fotos, Part 4

Hi Angels,

This week’s installment of Fallen-inspired photos is totally Rapture-centric. This sunrise shot of Mt. Sinai conjured the scene where Luce, Daniel, and the Outcasts land on the mountain at dawn, awaiting the other angels. It’s so serene and still, I’m instantly taken to that awe-inspiring moment when the sun rises and light spreads across the mountainscape.

When I saw this photo of a lone gondolier in Venice, Italy, I immediately thought of the moment in Rapture where Daniel guides his gondola through the canals of Venice and into choppy open waters beyond, searching for the first lost relic.

This photo of Vienna makes me think of all the adventures the group has here, from the moment Luce and Daniel land upon a green copper dome at night to the battle with the Scale. It’s such a beautiful, mesmerizing city and those clouds overhead remind me of the trouble that’s brewing as soon as the group arrives!

I hope you’ve enjoyed these Fallen Fotos! Stay tuned next week for a very special publishing announcement…

Fallen Fotos, Part Three

Time for the Passion pics!

This batch made me think of Luce’s  journey into the distant past. Imagine what it would be like to travel through an Announcer and end up face to face with your former self in ancient Egypt…

Or Shakespeare-era London…

But the truth is, anywhere (and anytime?) can feel like home as long as you’re with the one you love. Happy Monday, angels.

Have you seen photos that make you think of Passion? If so, post a link to your Fallen-inspired Pinterest boards or Facebook photos below in the comments section. And be sure to check back next week for all things Rapture.

Fallen Fotos, Part Two

This week I wanted to share these photos of the breathtaking Angel Island, off the coast of Sausalito, which remind me of the opening scene in Torment when Cam and Daniel meet to discuss the rules of the angelic truce. Doesn’t this transport you to their meeting by the water? Does it make anyone else want to head to Roland’s bonfire at the Shoreline beach?

Have you seen any photos that make you think of Torment? If you have, post a link to your Fallen-inspired Pinterest boards or Facebook photos below in the comments section.

And be sure to check back next week for a healthy dose of Passion

Fallen Fotos, Part One

Happy October, angels.

Atmospheric Fallenesque images keep finding me, and with Halloween just around the corner, I thought it would be the perfect time to share some of them with you. I love this one, which reminds me of the cemetery at Sword & Cross, where Luce, Daniel, and the rest of the gang spend so much time in the first book. Can’t you just see Luce and Cam traipsing through these headstones on their way to a picnic?

Celebrating Fall with Writing Advice

Fall makes me think of new beginnings: new school year, new friends, new opportunities, and (if you’re like me) a new book. Sometimes I’m lucky enough to have lots of novel ideas floating around my mind—but no clue how to turn the idea into a story. Other times, I’m missing that first spark of inspiration, but I’m certain once I have it, I’ll have all the tools to sit down and write something inspired.

Whether you’re grueling away on a first draft, ready to send your story out into the world, or just starting to jot down ideas into a journal, everyone struggles during the writing process. In honor of the new manuscript I’m currently struggling through, I thought I’d share some of my favorite writing tips.

So how do I start?

First, never turn off the writer. Whether I’m at the computer or out in the world, I draw inspiration from as many things around me as I can. Maybe it’s a song or an image I can’t get out of my head. Maybe it’s a sliver of an overheard conversation. (Eavesdropping is one of my favorite pasttimes, so be careful what you say within my earshot or you might end up in my next book.) I revel in my curiosity. I am vigilantly observant. I believe that inspiration is all around us. That’s why writers are never bored—and why we’re always scribbling manically into little notebooks or our cell phones.

Once I have my spark of inspiration, I often have to mull it over for a while. Sometimes it takes a day…sometimes it takes six months…or six years. Let it marinate. You’ll know when you’re ready to write. People say there are two kinds of writers: the plotters and the plungers. These days, plotting helps me see the shape of the story I want to create. But I didn’t always write that way. If you don’t feel like plotting out your story with an outline, just plunge right in and start writing. Let your characters surprise you. Follow them down unexpected roads. Go as deep as you can into their joys and sorrows—then go deeper. Don’t worry about where the story is going if you’re energized by your characters. You can (and will) go back and change things in future drafts. No need to criticize your work in the first draft. First drafts are skeletons, beginnings of beautiful things.

You will get stuck. We all get stuck. It always seems to happen to me when I was just getting in the flow. Writers block is terrible, but it is not an insurmountable enemy. Do not give up. Finish your stories. Here’s how:

Sometimes it helps me to look at the scene from a different angle. I write around it before I can write through it. Say I’m trying to write about my main character confronting an important fear, but I can’t get any leverage on her emotional pitch going into the situation. Sometimes I’ll imagine how someone else—that character’s boyfriend, her best friend, someone she recently argued with–might witness her facing that fear. What would these other characters notice about my protagonist that I might not? It’s exciting to trust your characters enough to allow them to know one another better than you might suspect you know them.

When I can’t get to the core of an emotional moment, I like to overwrite. I write a whole paragraph about a sunset instead of just a sentence. Then I go back and determine which image is the strongest, which image reflects something new about my characters. I keep that image and cut the rest. Eventually, those strong images begin to pop out first in my mind. And before I know it, I’m back in my inspired flow…at least until writer’s block strikes again.

When you’re finished with a draft, I highly advise you to find a writing friend to share your work with. You are looking for someone who can share your vision about what the story wants to be—not someone who will make your story into the kind of story they would write. These people are hard to find, but they are well worth seeking out and holding onto. Constructive criticism from this kind of reader is a great gift to your writing. Take the suggestions that feel immediately right, discard the ones that seem immediately wrong, sit on the troubling ones (they’re usually the best, and the hardest to absorb into your story). Don’t be afraid of revision. It is the step that makes stories come alive.

Finish your stories. Finish your stories. Finish your stories.

Writing advice is personal. Keep in mind that these directives are simply my take on my own process. Whatever gets you happy at your keyboard or notebook or cell phone or typewriter is the best writing advice for you.

Still aren’t sure how to get started, how about a writing prompt?

Look around and write down the first three words you see. They can be words on TV, on a book jacket, on a passing billboard, anything. Use all three in a sentence, and write a story that develops from that sentence. The result might be bizarre. That’s the point. Allow your creative self to write without expectations and see what you come up with.

What’s your favorite writing prompt? What do you do when crippled by writers block? Where do you turn to for support? Feel free to share your writing highs and lows with us in the comments section below.

Wishing you inspired and curious writing,

Lauren

Between You and Me: An Interview with Marisa Calin

You know that very specific joy you feel when you pick up a new book and everything just works? Your mood matches the tone of the book. You keep flipping back to the cover to enjoy how it fits the story more with each new chapter you read. You happen to be able to afford a big chunk of time, focus, and emotional investment when you first crack open the spine. And enough about you. The book! The writing draws you in from page one. You’re in love with the characters by page five. Something surprising yet inevitable happens in almost every scene. The structure impresses you. You laugh. You cry. You yearn. And at the end, you have questions that you know will never be answered—and you are okay with that. When you close the book you are amazed but unsatisfied because you now feel the gaping hole that true readers feel every time they finish a great book: You can’t imagine finding the above-catalogued joy ever again.

You know what I mean.

This happened to me with Marisa Calin’s debut novel, Between You and Me.

Between You and Me hits stores on Tuesday, August 7th. In advance of publication, Marisa was nice enough to answer a few questions for my blog. And her publisher was nice enough to contribute two copies of the book for me to give away to YOU. To enter to win, please leave a comment below sharing what you need for “the perfect reading experience” and I will choose two winners.

Happy reading! I hope you love the book as much as I do.

1. You did a beautiful job integrating the world of film/drama into your novel. What did you find inspiring about the screenplay/script format? Did it pose any structural challenges?

Firstly, thanks! I started by writing plays and screenplays. I’ve always been inspired to write because as an actor you interpret someone else’s characters, so it’s really exciting as a writer to create characters and relationships that reflect more personal experiences. There’s also something amazing about knowing that a novel is the last piece of the creative puzzle and people will be able to picture it exactly the way you tell it. So it seemed like the perfect starting point to take elements of a format I love for its vivid immediacy and tell a story as visually as possible. I started with the character, rather than the story. I knew that Phyre wanted to be an actress and that she sees her life in this sometimes self-consciously cinematic way. It was a fun point of view, to show Phyre’s subjective reality with just glimpses of a wider perspective. I stepped out of the screenplay framework to use a first person narrative because an unrequited crush is the most personal of experiences, ninety percent of which happens in your own head. So from any other perspective there isn’t even a story!

Since ideas have always come to me in pieces of dialog and in moments between characters, the scripted format also helped me play out those scenes in as concise and punchy a way as possible. The very present narrative of a screenplay lets you watch a story unfold moment by moment. That was also the greatest challenge; to keep it present. Every scene has a setting – Phyre is always somewhere, doing something – so I started every scene with what can she see, hear and feel right now? That helped keep my meandering thoughts in check, the kind you write late at night and think are brilliant and read the next morning and think ‘blablabla’. So while there were surprisingly few challenges, structurally the balance was to make sure that everything that needed to be said was there. Screenplays are visual not emotional, so with the help of an amazing editor, we’ve hopefully married Phyre’s inner monologue with the scripted elements I loved using. Above all, I thought it would be fun. And it was the greatest creative experience.

2. Your decision to use the gender-neutral second person in all interactions between Phyre and her best friend was innovative and moving. Can you talk about this choice?

Sure. As the story took shape, I realized very quickly that I couldn’t identify YOU’s gender if I didn’t want to write a story about gender. So as not to make a commentary on who we should end up with in our lives, I really wanted to resist giving Phyre a picture perfect handsome boy ending to put everything to rights. Then her crush on Mia could be read as a phase that she overcomes to embrace normality. The ambiguity meant that I could preserve the validity of a straight crush, but more importantly write about finding real love, not about with whom. A story about genuine love versus the power of imagined love was just as interesting to me. And I hope people will finish the book feeling that her choice ultimately didn’t need to be about gender. I knew who YOU was for me, but this way I could let the reader decide for themselves.

Fortunately, the idea also played wonderfully into my goal to write something inclusive, that as many people as possible might relate to. I wanted readers to find familiar emotions and recognize pieces of themselves in the characters, so I tried to leave space for the feelings to resonate and not give so much detail to the setting.

3. We all encounter people who help us grow, who push us toward our truest selves. Who in your life has been a “Mia?”

Can you believe no one I know personally has asked me that yet? There have been two Mia’s in my life and I’m grateful that I knew them. Those crushes led me to recognize that a person can be inexplicably special to you, and that’s something you can’t choose whether or not to feel. But I never told a single person how I felt. Neither of my Mia’s were teachers, they were both girls a few years older than me. So I was really more friends with them, and certainly never dreamt of telling either of them. Well, I dreamt of it, in a great declarative ‘I’m completely in love with you’ kind of way, but I never actually considered it. So there were probably therapeutic reasons for writing the book. I think they’d both fall off a chair if they knew how I had felt. The experience of writing about it has given me a sense of coming full circle and I’ve been tempted to tell them recently when I never have been before. Will I? Probably not. Maybe. I expect not… I wonder if lots of people I used to know are sitting there thinking, is it me? Well, two of you are right. How funny! Thanks. You inspired a book. I’m blushing. There are a few small clues in there. Any other similarities to people, places and events are strictly coincidental! Maybe.

4. You gracefully navigate the fear of being different–without making the world of LGBT prejudice a prominent element in the book. How did you acknowledge the reality of ignorance or closed-mindedness without letting it darken the bright heart of your love story?

I love this question. That was my very reason for writing this book. My hope was to normalize and validate the feelings of a crush without the need to make definitive sweeping statements about who we are. I felt sure the reality of closed-mindedness, and the equally powerful fear of closed-mindedness, would be present in the simple anxiety of giving voice to a feeling. My crushes at Phyre’s age were primarily just about the purest of admiration. The feeling was so positive and inspiring, but there was clearly something about it that meant I never expressed it to anyone. I never heard my friends talk about similar feelings, so never put myself out there emotionally or made myself vulnerable. Not feeling able to share in my own life was acknowledgment enough of prejudice, so it was easy to reflect that in the book without making it a focus. For Phyre, when you strip away the fears that come with what other people think, she is left, as you so perfectly put it, with the bright heart of her love story. The emotion of feeling love for someone, even of the same sex, is as pure and simple in your own heart as it is for anyone else.

5. Phyre’s name is so evocative. How did you choose it?

That’s such a fun question to think about. I started with her name. I didn’t find the character and then hunt for her name. ‘Phyre’ felt volatile, and ignitable. She’s in a key vulnerable place where we really start having a sense of who we are. There were so many things about the image that I liked. From kindling the spark of first love, to flames that you can’t smother even when you’re afraid of them. Sometimes a fire will burn and there’s really nothing you can do about it, which is what she’s facing. Those reasons might not have been so clear to me when I was on the first draft, but I noticed more and more that her name encompassed everything I wanted it to. The book was called ‘Phyre’ and only ever found a new name when it was pretty much on its way to the printer, so it was very much part of its identity for me.

6. What can we look forward to next from Marisa Calin?

That’s an excellent question. I’ve asked myself the same thing. As an actor, I will shortly be going into the studio to record another audio book, Sapphire Blue, the second in a trilogy by Kirsten Gier. And as a writer, I’m on a second novel. Its pretty different from Between You & Me. I started with a story rather than seeing where the characters would take me, so it’ll be an interesting challenge. It’s more plot driven, but still real life. I’ll leave the dystopia that I love to read to those who do it best, and angels, I will leave to the greatest angel of all. You. Thanks so much for giving me the chance to answer these amazing questions. They’ve been a pleasure to think about.

Marisa Calin is an actress and novelist. She grew up in Bath, England and moved to New York City to train at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. She tried her hand at plays and screenplays before her love of a good book inspired her to take charge of every facet of the creative picture and tackle a novel. The only thing better than being absorbed in the world of a film for two hours is being absorbed in the lives of characters for the duration of a book. She lives in Greenwich Village and writes from what she knows–memories of her not so distant teenhood.

“Daniel would find Lucifer, the angel who lived at the dead end of all ideas. Daniel did not fear the traitor who had been the Morning Star. Wherever, whenever they reached the end of this oblivion, Daniel would take his revenge. But first he would find Lucinda, for without her, nothing mattered. Without her love, nothing was possible.” – Rapture

An inside look into Rapture…

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to stop in on a session of the audiobook recording of Rapture.

It was so wonderful to finally meet Justine Eyre, the incredibly talented actress who has been the voice of all the audiobooks in the Fallen Series. Her genuine Passion for my stories was touching and heartfelt, and I love the pure and enthusiastic soul she has brought to her readings.

While I was there we took some video of the special Q and A that will be a feature at the end of the audiobook. She asked some great questions and I had some pretty revealing answers…

Watch the video to get a sneak peek!

Special Opportunity for International Readers…

Do you live in Spain or Mexico? How ’bout Holland? Germany? Italy? …Brazil maybe? Portugal? Italian speaking Switzerland perchance?!

If you answered yes, do you also think you have what it takes to promote Fallen abroad?

I have a whole stack of foreign language editions that need good homes. So I’m looking for a few dedicated and passionate fans from the countries mentioned above (as well as any other countries that Speak Spanish – though I also have copies in Catalan as well, so never fear my lovely fans from Barcelona!)

Here’s how it works: email me at laurenkatebooks@gmail.com with your name, age, occupation or grade/what you want to be when you grow up, and a short explanation of why you’d be great at promoting fallen. Who would you give the books to? Why? Maybe you have a school library that could use some work, or perhaps your mom works at a children’s hospital where patients need cheering.

Or maybe you just want your family to understand what all the Fallen fuss is about.

Whatever the reason, the fans I choose will be sent a whole bundle of books to distribute as they’ve described plus one or two goodies of their own, so get excited and start emailing! Submissions close on the last day of this month, March 31st!

A Whole Week of Fallen in Love Promotion

Hello my fantastic Fallen readers!

In keeping with my New Years resolution to update and involve you in my adventures in “Authorland,” I’d like to share with you an amazing trip I made at the end of last month. So let’s start with…

Arkansas. Birthplace of former President Bill Clinton, the #1 producer of rice and poultry in the continental United States, and most importantly? Home to AMAZING Fallen Fans!

My journey started off with a bang and a very warm welcome with a great event at National Park Community College. Thanks to my mother in law, Jill, for setting that up!

Then I got to talk to three fabulous groups of students at Lake Hamilton Junior High and High School in Hot Springs. Everyone was so bright and engaging, it really made my day.

Meredith and me at the sigining. It was great to meet her and we'll see some of her art later in the week, so stay tuned...
Talking to students!

Thanks so much to the students and the staff, especially Jil’lana Heard!

Next up was a a signing in Little Rock – hosted by the excellent independent bookstore Wordsworths. I got to meet readers from all over Arkansas, and it was especially great to have my family there.

Me and my little Nephew at Wordsworths

The next day Random House hosted my first video chat. It was so cool getting to talk to readers from all over the world. If you missed the chat, you can see watch it here for answers on all things Fallen:

Random House Video Chat

Lastly, back home in Los Angeles – the land of sun and sound stages – I joined Blake Nelson, Carol Tanzman, Abby McDonald, and Kathy McCullough for the Los Angeles Public Library’s first Teen Read Night. Cecil Castellucci hosted our panel and the room was packed–a great sign for the program, which will host five teen authors on the fourth Thursday of each month. If you missed us last time, please come out to the next event on March 22!

Thank you again to the Los Angeles Public Library!

I know I’ve said this a million times, but how blessed am I for getting to meet so many f my wonderful fans?! As always, I had a great time connecting with you all. And I hope you enjoyed this little taste of what’s to come with my Rapture tour this summer. Stay tuned for details and get excited for the final chapter in Luce’s centuries long journey for love!

And the Winners Are…

Alvin, Erica, Lindsay, Amber, Katrina, and Monica!

A HUGE thank you to all of you who submitted answers to these questions, I received so many amazing responses that it was nearly impossible to just pick six for this giveaway. But don’t you worry, there will be other chances to win cool Fallen prizes coming up soon, I promise.

So let’s see what our six had to say about the series and upcoming Fallen possibilities!

Tell me about something in your life that has reminded you of Fallen, or vice versa, something in Fallen that has reminded you of anything you’ve experienced in your own world – huge or small, but still important. How are you and Luce and Daniel connected?

“Fallen has reminded me so much about my personal life that it is beyond scary. I have almost lost my love on plenty of occasions due to her being so ill and constantly being checked to see if she has another tumor in her brain or cancer in her body. Luce reminds me a lot of her because they are innocent women who blame themselves for the things that their boyfriends have to endure to protect them. I’ve had arguments and fights with friends or family because they speak or think certain things about her that are not true, just like Luce. I am not an angel and I internally battle my beliefs on plenty of occasions because I cannot comprehend how so many bad things can happen to a wonderful woman or how our love  gets constantly tested by outside factors.”
What do you want to see happen in Rapture? What are you hoping for most of all?

“I know I’m probably going against what everyone else wants to see happen,  but honestly I wish some how Luce and Daniel’s bond could be broken. That they would no longer be so crazy in love with each other… I think Luce should be able to end up with Miles. His character was just so nice and sweet and he was obviously in love with her, since he was able to project her to save her life at the end of Torment. If she were able to be with someone more normal like Miles I think her life would be a happy and drama free one! Then without Daniel being so connected/drawn to Luce he would be free to move on too.”

What part of the series was the hardest for you to read, the most painful scene or scenes to watch unfold?

“The part of the series that was hardest for me to read was Penn’s death in Fallen. Poor Penn she had already had such a hard life with her father dying and being stuck at dismal Sword & Cross. It seemed like she was able to open up by becoming friends with Luce. Then all the drama of the angels had to unfold and then poor Penn was murdered by Miss Sophia. We never even got to find out what would have happened to her and how her life would have turned out. It was just so sad. And then In Torment when Luce was back at Sword & Cross she went to visit Penn’s grave and it just brought up all that sadness again. Penn was such a sweet character it was sad to see her go.”

With a movie possibly coming out in a few years, (the process is so slow!) what are you most concerned the filmmakers will get right?

“I can’t wait for the movie to, eventually, come to light, however I am worried about a couple of things. The first thing obviously being the casting. If the casting is wrong for any of the cast then the movie just won’t work. They have to stick to, as close as possible, the exact description of your characters, luce’s hair, daniel and cams build, arriane’s attitude and wit, Pennyweather’s friendly albeit through lack of choice love for luce. If the characters cast don’t understand any of this the movie will be wrong, so casting is a concern that must be right. The other concern would be how they relay the book to script/film. As it usually happens everything is shortened, or lines from one character in the book given to another on the screen, it needs to stay the same even if its shortened, sometimes movies are rushed through because obviously movies can’t last usually over the 2/3 hours mark, but please keep the characters lines to themselves. I know a said a couple of things, however, I can’t help myself the sets have to be right. When I read your books, I have in my head visuals of what everything looks like, sword & cross, the cemetry, shoreline, all her past lives the hospital in italy, the crumbled church in Moscow, the sets should be to your exact description. And lastly, if it is at all possible, could you have a consulting role in the movie, because if you did, then I could live with the decisions of the movie, because you would have been fine with them.”

Which of Luce and Daniel’s past lives did you enjoy best, or would love to see more of?

“I have to say. I teared up when I read about the Luce’s past life in Prussia. It’s not one with an entire chapter on it but it’s one where Luce (present) got to her life in Prussia and watches her own funeral. But as I saw the sorrow and pain in Luce’s (Prussia life) family and friends eyes. I was mesmerized how Daniel laid there next to Luce’s coffin and how I got that small fact about Daniel. How Daniel sleeps for days after Luce dies. I enjoyed that life the most because for the first time. There wasn’t any kissing, or even words but just Daniel’s gesture of being there with to stay connected with his memories to Luce. It was the one life that I wanted each and every detail about through Luce’s and Daniel’s eyes.”

Today’s the Day! Fall in Love.

Today’s the big day! I’m thrilled to share this collection of short stories from the Fallen world with you. I can’t wait to hear what you think of the book.

Fallen in Love came along as something of a surprise. I wasn’t expecting to write it. My publisher was waiting on Rapture. You were waiting on Rapture. I was waiting on Rapture….

But I wasn’t ready to write it yet. It made me nervous to think about writing “The End” to a series that has meant so much to me. How would I tie up a story that has covered six millennia of time and space and passion? I really had no idea.

So I did what you do when you’re nervous: I procrastinated. My mind ambled over someplace easier…like Arriane. Had she ever had a love story of her own? And what about Roland? Was there a heartbreak hidden beneath that cool façade? I started jotting down a few notes for side stories about the other characters in the series, but I didn’t know what they were adding up to.

Then one day I got a very moving letter from a reader who was going through a difficult breakup. I searched for a way to respond to this person. Eventually, my response came out in a story—a story that turned into Fallen in Love.

Luce and Daniel’s love story is emblematic for eternal love—but it’s far from the only kind of love. There’s platonic love, love that grows slowly over time, even (unfortunately) unrequited love. Over the past couple of years, I have had the pleasure of interacting with many of you—either in person, over email, or in chats like this. And every time you open up about your own romantic experiences, I come away inspired. Fallen in Love is a tribute to my readers and the many different kinds of love you’ve shared with me.

I’m going to be answering questions all week on Random Buzzers  so I hope you’ll come on over and join the conversation.

Thanks so much for reading and enjoying my books,

Lauren

Dash of Romance vol. 6

The Saffron Flower...

Some of you know how much I love to cook. When I’m done writing at the end of the day, cooking something exciting often feels like the most fun way to wind down. To me, cooking is the opposite of writing: where writing is sedentary and brain-draining…cooking is hands-on and can be done with a clear, calm mind.

My husband Jason loves saffron, so for Christmas one year, I got him a book called the Essential Saffron Companion. Here’s our favorite special-occasion recipe from the book. It take some time and effort but it’s worth it!

Mussels in Saffron Cream with Noodles

serves 4

40-50 saffron filaments infused in 2tbs (30ml) of warm (not boiling) white wine*
40 large mussels (green lipped ones work great)
6oz (150 g) unsalted butter
3tbs (45ml) chopped onion
3tbs (45ml) chopped flat leaf parsley
1/2 bottle dry white wine

Sauce:
2 shallots, diced
2tsp (10 ml) tomato puree
8oz (250 ml) mussel stock
4oz (175 ml) heavy cream
juice of one small lemon

To cook the mussels:

Scrub and de-beard the mussels. In a heavy pan, melt 2oz (50g) butter, add onions, parsley, half the wine. Bring to a boil and add the mussels. Cook, shaking the pan periodically until the mussels open (time will vary depending on what kind of mussels you use..anywhere between 5 and 10 minutes). Discard any that do not open. Remove each mussle from the pan and into a bowl with a slotted spoon to ensure that the juices remain in the pan. Reduce the contents of the pan for two minutes, then strain the mussel stock and reserve.

To make the sauce:

Sweat the shallots in 2oz butter for 5 minutes. Add the tomato puree, half of the saffron, and the rest of the wine. Add the reserved mussel stock and reduce everything in the pan by half (maybe 10 minutes of cooking on medium). Taste, season with salt and pepper to taste, remove from heat for a few minutes. Add the cream and reduce again if needed, adding a little lemon juice to taste.

To serve:

Cook your preferred type of noodles. (On an ambitious day, we’ll make homemade paparadelle using a pasta maker, but fresh store bought noodles will work great, too.) Bring the sauce to a simmer and stir in the remaining saffron and the last 2 oz of butter. Place the mussels back in the sauce pan to warm them. Pile pasta on plates or bowl, add ten mussels per serving, then divide the sauce over the dishes. Garnish with chopped chives or parsley.

Bon appetite!

*I’ve been using this incredible Iranian saffron that I was so excited to buy from the spice bazaar in Istanbul last fall. But you can use powdered saffron or any kind of filaments infused for 1/2 hour to an hour in warm wine.

We travel frequently for work, so sometimes it can feel like a special treat to stay in and cook together. I have a feeling that’s just what we’ll be doing this Valentine’s Day.

Do you have any favorite romantic recipes?

Until tomorrow (and you KNOW what tomorrow is!)

Daily Dash of Romance vol. 5

Sometimes, love is hell. Just ask Arriane (or read about it in her chapter of Fallen in Love). But that doesn’t mean your whole world has to screech to a halt. If your Valentines Day this year is shaping up to be less than romantic (as mine have been many times), take a cue from Robyn and keep dancing on your own.

And when your tired feet need a rest (if you are wearing shoes like Robyn, that could happen quickly), I can think of a real good book for you to curl up with…

What’s your favorite song to dance to on your own?

Until tomorrow,

Daily Dash of Romance vol. 4

Virginia Woolf is one of my favorite writers and To the Lighthouse is my favorite book of hers. It’s not expressly a love story, but there is romance flowing across every page, to and from each one of the characters, often showing up in the most surprising places. I am always in awe of Woolf’s ability to jump in one character’s mind one paragraph, then leave it to enter another character’s mind in the next. She writes a killer dinner party scene.

Megan and Me at my wedding--best friends since the age of 3!

My closest friend Megan (some of you may have heard me speak about how Lucinda was based in part on her) read this passage from the point of view of Lily Briscoe at my wedding:

“What art was there to love, by which one pressed through into secret chambers? What device for becoming, like waters poured into one jar, inextricably the same, one with the object one adored? Could the body achieve, or the mind, subtly mingling in the intricate passages of the brain? Or the heart? Could loving make them one? For it was not knowledge, but unity that was desired, not inscriptions on tablets, nothing that could be written in any language known to man, but intimacy itself–which is knowledge.”

Feel free to share your favorite romantic passage from a novel below!

Until tomorrow,

Clark Gable and Vivian Leigh

My first book crush was Rhett Butler from Margaret Mitchell’s Gone with the Wind. I must have read all twelve hundred pages of that book twelve times when I was twelve years old. I remember reading it once while visiting my grandmother in Baltimore. She told me how much she loved the movie–it was the only film she’d ever gone to the theater to see twice. When we rented and watched it together, I fell in love with Clark Gable’s depiction of the character. This contentious scene between Scarlet and Rhett scene has always been a favorite of mine.

Does this guy remind you of anyone you know? (Or have ever read a book about…?)

Daily Dash of Romance vol. 2

A portrait of John Donne from the National Portrait Gallery in London

Today’s Dash comes from love poet master, John Donne. His words inspire me regularly. (Look for him again in the epigraph of Rapture!) Like The Farewell of Telemachus and Eucharis, this poem centers around two departing lovers, but in this case, this speaker finds reasons to celebrate the separation. Take a look:

A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning
by John Donne

As virtuous men pass mildly away,
And whisper to their souls to go,
Whilst some of their sad friends do say,
"The breath goes now," and some say, "No,"

So let us melt, and make no noise,
   No tear-floods, nor sigh-tempests move;
'Twere profanation of our joys
To tell the laity our love.

Moving of the earth brings harms and fears,
   Men reckon what it did and meant;
But trepidation of the spheres,
   Though greater far, is innocent.

Dull sublunary lovers' love
(Whose soul is sense) cannot admit
Absence, because it doth remove
   Those things which elemented it.

But we, by a love so much refined
That our selves know not what it is,
Inter-assured of the mind,
Care less, eyes, lips, and hands to miss.

Our two souls therefore, which are one,
Though I must go, endure not yet
A breach, but an expansion.
Like gold to airy thinness beat.

If they be two, they are two so
As stiff twin compasses are two:
Thy soul, the fixed foot, makes no show
   To move, but doth, if the other do;

And though it in the center sit,
Yet when the other far doth roam,
It leans, and hearkens after it,
And grows erect, as that comes home.

Such wilt thou be to me, who must,
   Like the other foot, obliquely run;
Thy firmness makes my circle just,
And makes me end where I begun.

The best poems (and books and songs and paintings) give us something new to admire and enjoy each time we return to them. I was hooked by the speaker’s suggestion in the fourth stanza that his love is so elevated it resides above the moon. (Look for elements of this in Roland’s story withinFallen in Love). Today I am particularly struck by two images towards the end of the poem: The first in lines 21-24 suggests that because the lovers’ two souls are joined, when they are apart theyexpand and their love fills in the space between them. And the second says that if their souls are in fact two–they are like a compass, one always pulling the other toward it during periods of separation. It reminded me of Luce and Daniel–and I hope it inspires you too.

Until tomorrow,

Lauren

Daily Dash of Romance vol. 1

Counting down to the release of Fallen in Love (6 more days!), I thought I’d share a selection of things I find romantic and inspiring. Check back here every day from now until the book’s release on Tuesday (in the US…sorry for those of you elsewhere who have to wait a little longer) for your DDoR.

Today’s Dash of Romance is a painting I fell in love with during a recent trip to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. It’s called The Farewell of Telemachus and Eucharis and was painted by Jacques-Louis David in 1818. David was inspired by the French novel, Les Aventures de Télémaque, which is loosely based on characters from the Odyssey. Here we see Odysseus’s son, Telemachus, who has has fallen in love with Eucharis only to have to leave her to continue searching for his missing father.

There is an electricity between these two lovers that makes their goodbye both torturous and stunning. And of course, I love the loyalty in that little dog’s eyes! And I want her dress. Clearly there is much to covet here.

Maybe it’s the hopeful romantic in me, but I’ve gotta believe these two (and the dog!) will meet again…

Do you have a favorite romantic painting? Have you ever had to say a very difficult goodbye to someone you love? I’d love for you to share your thoughts below.

Until tomorrow!

Romantically yours,

Lauren

Your Stories – From the Passion tour

Dear all,

I’ve received a handful of wonderful stories and photo submissions from fans across the world, and now the time has come for me to share them with YOU! First off I’d like to thank you all once more for coming out to support the release of “Passion.” You are the greastest.

Now here’s our very first installment of fan tales from my worldly wanderings. More to come soon, so if you haven’t sent me your story yet, there’s still time – email away!

– Lauren Kate

    • Wilson – Melbourne:

“Well, I first went on plane. Ever. To go to Melbourne. To meet Lauren Kate. On Collins street, Boarders.

The plane flew, then deceneded in Melbourne. When, there we and my family, then went to the apartment. Went around Melbourne, and explored the place. Then it hit, “six’o clock” and me and my mum rushed into Boarders. Quickly.

Then we where there. And lauren kate walks in. Yay! Then the angels start to fall. And so on.”

      Anastasia – Melbourne:

“On August 3rd my life long dream was fulfilled. I was able to finally meet you, give you a hug, have a conversation with you (one I will NEVER forget) and get my books signed. My friend Denise, and I were so ecstatic about meeting you. For months we were planning what we were going to wear, as well as what gift to get you, we even arrived at the signing before anybody else. Days before the signing, I noticed that you posted your love for Tim Tams and Carmello koalas on your Twitter. That was the ultimate decider. Along with a basket full of goodies, came a note (hoping that you read it :p) expressing our absolute love and admiration for you. Lauren, you have inspired me in numerous ways. Before I read Fallen, I was in no way, shape or form to interested in reading, period.”

      Christine and Tom – London:

“I got to meet you in London during a High Tea, because I won the contest from WPG from Belgium, I was there with my boyfriend Tom.

You signed the first two books from the Fallen collection and the third one which we received in London. We also talked about the things I am writing and you gave me a lot of tips. Which off course I am using! Thank you for the wonderful day we had in London. I still remember it as yesterday and think about it when I am reading Passion. Passion for the UK – Scenes from the Tour

The leaves may not be turning in Los Angeles, but it’s truly autumn in the UK where they’ve more than “Fallen.” How wonderful it was to hop across the pond and celebrate the release of Passion with so many dedicated readers. As always, I was blessed with countless memorable meetings, deeply touching conversations, and innumerable brilliant fan creations.

You never cease to amaze me. Thanks to each and every one of you who came out to support the book. Keep reading and keep reaching out!

Speaking at the London Launch Party...
Chatting with cool UK bloggers 🙂
No good launch party is complete without hot angels.
A fun and spirited reading at Easons in Dublin!
Fans in hand painted t-shirts featuring their favorite boys - all brilliant and hilarious.
Honored to be signing the wall of legendary authors who've visited Easons before me!
My very last stop on the epic Passion tour: the Bath Festival of Children's Literature. I got to meet fans who I'd been tweeting with for years!
At the Roman Baths, in Bath. It's is a BEAUTIFUL place, and the whole city was alive and feeling literary because of the festival.
At high tea with fantastic Dutch and Belgian readers who flew up just for the afternoon to meet me! It was wonderful to have real conversations with fellow book lovers 🙂

Greetings From Brazil!

I have had a BLAST trekking around this beautiful country – From Rio to Sao Paolo, from Curitiba to Florianopolis – my fans never cease to amaze me with their warmth and enthusiasm.

How lucky am I to be here?! More soon as I finish up and head back home…

Hang gliding in Rio - Now I know how Luce feels 🙂
Cecilia and I up in the clouds! Cecilia is a wonderful woman from my Brazilian Publisher who just so happens to have the down low on some amazing secret restaurants in Rio.
What a crowd! Rio has been good me.
And another warm welcome.
Lovely journalist Frini moderating my very first translated public event!

Tell me your Passion Tour story!

These last few months, I’ve lived in airports – hopped and skipped all the way around the world so that I could meet you: my amazing and dedicated fans.

We’ve had wonderful discussions about about love and fate, about how to write and what fuels my own imagination as an author. And of course, we’ve gone back and forth between Cam and Daniel, over and over again… (it’s a tough decision!)

Unfortunately, I can’t visit every city, every bookstore, and talk with every passionate reader.

So I ask those of you who have participated in the Passion tour this summer to share your stories with the rest of us!

Please send any tour stories (under 200 words), photographs, or videos to laurenkatebooks@gmail.com – I’ll then select a handful of submissions to go up on the site so that everyone can experience a little bit of the excitement for themselves!

Happy emailing,

Lauren Kate

Tour of the Passion Tour

I had the most amazing time last week on the US Passion tour. A huge, impassioned thanks to all of you who came out to the events in SF, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas. You drove from other states, through crazy weather, carting your whole families with you. You shared fascinating, poignant, and funny stories with me about your lives and your relationships to the Fallen books. You even got me to do the Time Warp (see below). I ended the tour feeling happy, lucky, and grateful to have such wonderful support from so many readers. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

If I missed your city this time, I wish I could have gotten everywhere to meet you all. I hope I’ll be somewhere closer to you in the near future.

If I’m heading your way in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Manila, Cebu, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, or Auckland–I can’t wait to see you and share Passion with you. See you soon!

First stop at Keplers in Menlo Park, CA. A great kickoff to the tour.
The crowd at Barnes and Noble in Alpharetta, GA. They got soaked in a summer storm but still made it out!
The very lively crowd at Books and Books in Coral Gables
What's Miami without a little beach action?

The long line at the Southlake, TX signing. Thanks for waiting in it, y'all!

A Quick Note on Being Hacked

My email account was hacked on Friday and as a result many of you got a strange email from me saying that I was mugged in London and needed cash. I’m fine! Please don’t send money! This was a false email from the hacker!

I’ve reclaimed my accounts now and everything is back under control. BUT the worst part is that my entire email archive was wiped out. I say this because many of you have written me through this website or through my direct email account and I have lost all record of it. Which means if you have written to me in the past week or two and are waiting on a response from me, please write again! I’m sorry for the confusion and delay but I would love to hear from you!

Thanks for your support (and the very nice outpouring of offers to help in case I really had been in trouble!)
